APRIL 2008
22 - Critical Excel Tools for the Meeting Professional REGISTER NOW!

Speaker: James Spellos, CMP
Date: Tuesday, April 22, 2008
Time: 8:30am - 12:00pm
Agenda: Breakfast followed by Program
Location: NYS United Teachers, Latham, New York

Description:
Excel is the most widely used business application software in the marketplace. Unfortunately, most users just know the basics and spend countless hours re-formatting spreadsheets that could be accomplished in a fraction of the time. Learn how to harness the fundamental and advanced tools of Excel in this session. Utilizing meeting industry examples (tracking registration & housing), see how Excel can save time on all aspects of your job. Additionally, attend this session and you will work with and receive 3 meeting industry spreadsheets: Rack Rate, Break Even Analysis and Attrition.

Attendees should bring a laptop with them if possible.  If not, they will be paired with someone who does.  All attendees will receive an email prior to the event that contains all the spreadsheets we will be working on in class.

Take-away's:
- Use over 15 advanced Excel tools.
- Customize graphs and use other conditional formatting features.
- Discuss how to combine information in multiple worksheets into a single cell.

“I thought I knew a lot about Excel, but I was just touching the iceberg! From minute number one I learned a new tip and by the end of the course I was able to teach my coworkers some intermediate concepts which can be applied
specifically to meeting planning.
This is a meeting not to miss!”

MARCH 2008
12 - Some Boats Need to Be Rocked: How to Use Power Phrases to Talk About What Matters Most
Date: March 12, 2008
Time: 11:30am - 2:30pm
Agenda: Lunch followed by Program
Location: Albany Marriot, Albany, NY

Speaker:  Meryl Runion, CSP, Cascade, CO

Description:
Playing it safe is not all it’s cracked up to be. Some boats need to be rocked – and if you go through life never making waves, you’ll fall far short of your potential. In particular, you need to be able and willing to have “risky conversations” and engage in “dangerous dialogue” about topics people would prefer you avoid. This presentation provides the “Power Phrases” you need to navigate the communication waters of life in a changing world and to successfully talk about the things that matter most.

Take-away's:

-Utilize six steps to make your point in communication.

-Discuss specific strategies that create mutual respect and understanding and make it

-Describe “respect-robbing poison phrases” that weaken your message and “vicious-venom poison phrases” that create defensiveness.

FEBRUARY 2008
12 - Planners & Suppliers Finding Common Ground
Date: Tuesday, February 12, 2008
Time: 11:30am - 3:00pm
Agenda: Lunch followed by Program
Location: The Saratoga Hotel & Conference Center, Saratoga Springs, NY

Gain valuable insights into the negotiation process in what some consider a “seller’s market” during this highly interactive.

MPI NENY Chapter luncheon program on
February 12th, 11:30am – 3:00pm!

A role-play featuring NYC and Connecticut meeting and hotel professionals has been created to present a mock negotiation.  (Think of this as a meeting planner’s version of “moot court”).  Watch and listen as they act out a real life meeting bid scenario, encountering the time pressure and negotiating obstacles that confront us all.  This will be an interactive program with audience participation and the unique opportunity for both planners and suppliers to come away with creative solutions to familiar challenges, finding common ground in the negotiating and planning process.
  Michael Mendrick, Program Host

Master of Ceremonies for the program is Michael Mendrick, association executive, humorist, and meeting industry colleague.  Michael began his career as a convention sales manager for the Rochester (NY) Convention & Visitors Bureau, moving to Saratoga in 1985 to serve for ten years as the first executive director of the Saratoga Convention & Tourism Bureau. After four years of freelance writing and speaking to more than 150 organizations, Michael served for two years as the president & CEO of the Southern Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce.
He is currently in his seventh season as the executive director of the 11,000-member Professional Ski Instructors of America – Eastern Division. In his “spare time” Michael has written travel and trivia books, material for Russian comedian Yakov Smirnoff, captions for the cartoon Close to Home and most recently a 315-page novel, Distant Sons.

Marie Schlump, CSEP, Prudential Annuities, Shelton, CT

Marie is a 15 year industry veteran, joining Prudential Annuities headquarters in 2006 to lead the event marketing team in planning sales and continuing education events.  Prior to that Marie ran her own award-winning event planning company, Parties with Pizzazz, located in Connecticut.  Her career in the meeting industry began when she was in the U.S. Army, planning tours and seminars for the Public Affairs and Community Relations department, in addition to running a civilian enterprise base newspaper.  She is a member of the MPI Westfield Chapter.

Dan Paradiso, CMP, Associate DOS, The Carlton, New York, NY

Dan is Associate Director of Sales for The Carlton in New York City, and is on the board of directors of MPI Greater New York Chapter as Vice President of Communications.  He and his wife Tara welcomed a baby boy to their family in November.

Haydee Fernandez, Revenue Manager, Taj Hotels

Haydee is Director of Revenue Management at The Pierre on Fifth Avenue in New York City, a luxury property managed by Taj Hotels.  She was recently nominated for an HSMAI award for her work with the hotel, which is undergoing a major renovation in first quarter 2008.  Haydee trained as a physical therapist, but found her way to the hospitality industry, and has never looked back!
