What is a CMP?
The foremost certification of the meetings, conventions and exhibitions industry, the CMP program recognizes individuals who have achieved the industry's highest standard of professionalism. Established in 1985, the CMP program is administered by the Events Industry Council, and aims to increase the professionalism of meeting management professionals in all sectors of the industry by:
- Identifying a comprehensive body of knowledge in the meeting management profession
- Promoting industry standards, practices and ethics
- Stimulating the advancement of the art and science of meeting management
- Increasing the value of Certified Meeting Professionals to their employers
- Maximizing the value received from the products and services provided by CMPs
The CMP Process
The CMP certification program is a two-part process in which you must complete the CMP application to demonstrate your eligibility, and then successfully pass a written examination covering the functions performed in meeting management.
Submitting the Application - You may apply for the CMP at any time. Once approved, you have one year to take and pass the CMP exam before you have to reapply. Your application must be submitted online. Your first step is to create an online account where you can document your continuing education activities and your professional experience. Taking the Exam - The exam in based on the CMP International Standards (CMP-IS) and each question is tied to one of the 9 domains in the CMP-IS. The CMP exam is offered 4 times per year in January, May, August, and November. Click here for a complete list of exam dates.

Looking for more information about the CMP? MPI NENY provides two (2) Information Sessions each year (spring & fall) at our monthly education events where you will learn about the process involved in applying for the CMP and preparing to take the exam
Need Continuing Education Credits? MPI NENY is a “Preferred Provider” and has formally registered many of our education sessions with EIC for pre-approval of continuing education credits.
Ready to start studying? MPI NENY will assist in connecting you with other members also working toward their certification and provide direction in tackling the required study materials. Study clubs are offered in the Spring (for the May & August exams) and in the Fall (for the November and January exams).
