CMP - Certified Meeting Professional

What is a CMP?

The CMP (Certified Meeting Professional) is an internationally recognized certification program that evaluates the competency of meeting professionals.  The CMP designation represents the standard of excellence in today’s meeting and exposition industry.  Requirements for certification are based on professional experience and academic examination.  The CMP Examination is a tool for measuring the competency of a meeting professional and is designed to reflect the knowledge required to manage meetings.

The CMP Program:
  • Promotes the status and credibility of the meeting profession
  • Advances uniform standard of practice
  • Promotes continuing professional development

Why be a CMP?

Numerous benefits have been cited for obtaining the CMP designation.  It is one of the highest designations in the meeting profession.  It shows an individual’s dedication to their profession and their continued commitment to excellence by maintaining their CMP status.  An increased knowledge of all aspects of meeting management is gained during preparation for the CMP examination.  Since the first exams were administered in 1985, over 8,000 meeting managers have received their certification.  Since the Northeastern New York Chapter started its study group in 2005, 22 people (and counting!) have passed the exam and joined those ranks.  And we are proud to share that we have a 90% success ratio.

Reasons study group participants gave for seeking certification include:
  • To challenge myself and continue to learn
  • To enhance my professional development/career
  • Wanted to have proof that I was well rounded in the industry – I strive to be the best I can and this is one way to do so
  • Personal growth
  • To become more marketable
  • To better myself and make more money

Several students also mentioned that receiving the CMP designation is now part of their job goals/directives from upper management.  Many hotels are requiring it of their national sales reps and it is becoming more common for those looking to hire to say “CMP preferred/required.”

What is the process involved in becoming a CMP?

The certification program is a two-step process:

(1)
 Demonstrate
on an application via a point system their broad range of experience in the field of meeting management
(2)
 Successfully
complete a written examination covering the functions performed in meeting management

Application process:

Eligibility to be seated for the CMP exam is based on a system whereby the applicant accrues points derived from actual experience in several aspects of meeting management. To qualify as an applicant, an individual must acquire a minimum of 90 out of 150 possible points. Points are assigned as indicated below within five specific areas of meeting management:

  • Experience in Meeting Management - 35 points allowed
  • Management Responsibility - 55 points allowed
  • Education & Continuing Education - 25 points allowed
  • Membership in Professional Organizations - 10 points allowed
  • Professional Contribution to the Field - 30 points allowed

CMP Study Group

What is it>>>

The CMP Study Group is an interactive coaching session.  Approaching the exam “cold” may be quite intimidating, as most of us haven’t taken a standardized test since the SATs.  The Study Group will lead you through some test taking strategies and review key test subjects that you might not be as familiar with such as adult education, reservations & housing, trade shows and printed material production.

Course Outline

For each session (except the review classes at the end), you will have chapters assigned to read.  These chapters are from three resources - CIC Manual (8th edition), CIC International Manual (1st edition), and Professional Meeting Management (5th edition). These can be purchased online via www.conventionindustry.org
.

Course Fee

CMP Study Groups are a benefit of your membership with the Northeastern New York Chapter of MPI.  If you are not a member, but there is an active member already in your organization, you may participate in the study groups for a fee of $200.

CMP Recertification

The CMP Recertification Application Form is available to download from the CIC Website.
Complete the form and send it to CIC with the $200 USD fee no later than October 15 of the year in which the CMP certification expires. Per a recent decision by the CMP Board of Directors, expired CMPs will be required to successfully pass the written examination to regain legal use of their designation in the future. CMPs who do not recertify will lose their designation!

CMPs with valid addresses with CIC will receive reminder notices in the year in which they are due to recertify. CMPs may update their address information and review their certification information on the CIC Website.

To view or make changes to your information: access the following link www.conventionindustry.org/cmp/cmp_directories.htm, choose CIC Address-Record Update from the list of available options, input your CIC ID # and password and proceed with your update.
